REVIEWS

"Ella (Jacob Lovendahl, with expressive body language and spot-on timing), a self-described “gender illusionist,” mixes insightful truths and ripe Eve Arden wisecracks while skillfully sashaying in high heels."

“He is commanding, tickling the audience with his monarch-sized fake eyelashes and exuberance and then carefully breaking its heart. Lewis also seems tailor-made for the role—wiry, whimsical and wonderfully flirtatious. It would be easy to spend the show’s run time (two and a half hours with intermission) watching him alone.”

Christie Chisholm/The Alibi/Cabaret

"I can't say enough about Jacob Lewis's performance (he has great bona fides—he has just come off a stint in New York as a featured vocalist on the recent Jay Z and Kanye West album). He is the heart and soul of this production. Simply astonishing."

Jacob Lewis Smith, our second place winner, created four memorable characters, displaying incredible vocal versatility where each character had its own voice. His performances were marked by emotional truth and incredible vulnerability, and real risk taking. The judges admired his specific choices in his acting, and also his ability to take coaching in the semi finals and bring basically new performances at the finals."

Kurt Weill Foundation of Music/ Lotte Lenya Competition

"There was an outstanding song and dance number by Carolyn Amaradio and Jacob Lewis Smith as the Jones daughter and her ''escort.''

"It really takes going ham to an epic (read: operatic) level. Aude Cardona and Jacob Lewis Smith get their moments to shine around the three minute mark."

Gazelle Emami /The Huffington Post/HAM Kanye West and Jay Z

"Weill offers plenty of lighthearted relief before the tragedy, including a snappy boogie-woogie-style dance (expertly choreographed by Francis Patrelle) between the ditzy Mae Jones, charmingly played by Carolyn Amaradio, and her admirer, Dick McGann, sung with charisma by Jacob Lewis Smith."

"Her gay brother Jason (Jacob Lewis Smith)is consistently hilarious as he sings about his new crush in "spencersgt@yahoo.com" and even more hilarious in the title song "Moving Right Along", a duet with Miles whom he has dragged to 50 Shades of Gay. Who has observed a horde of potential partners without criticizing them mercilessly!? One poor victim was "dorky, porky, not NewYorky".""

Meche Kroop/Voce di Meche/ Moving Right Along: The songs of Jeff Blumenkrantz

"Analisa Leaming, Jacob Lewis Smith, and James Benjamin Rodgers, laureates of the Lotte Lenya Singing Competition, interpreted these five songs with the moving text content with devotion and remarkable emotional empathy. In Come In Mornin ', Catfish Song, This Time Next Year, Apple Jack and River Chanty, they sang about the fascinating world of life on the Mississippi River, about the slaves' struggle for freedom, and their stories of the past African Americans struggle for human rights, as do Huckleberry and Tom Sawyer's dreams of happiness."
